The Shadow

I am very into Jungian archetypes and one of them happens to be the shadow. The shadow represents our repressed desires and instincts. In our "black and white" society, it is seen as the evil side in all of us. In Christianity, there's the belief that the devil within us is the base urges that must be shunned in order to trancend to heaven. Because the devil is associated a lot with snakes, I imagine the shadow as a reptilian figure.
